Antigay former Missouri Speaker of the House Rod Jetton is accused of sexually assaulting a lover in the middle of intercourse because she failed to use their agreed-upon safe word.
Jetton, who in 2007 supported a state law banning gay sex and served as a political adviser for Republican Mitt Romney's failed 2008 presidential bid, is accused of hitting an choking the victim during sexual intercourse.
The victim claims she remembers drifting in and out of consciousness as the two sat in her home on November 15 drinking wine and watching a football game.
According to The Kansas City Star, the affidavit claims the victim and Jetton agreed on the safe word "green balloons" to use as a stop word during sexual intercourse.
The morning after the assault, Jetton allegedly told the victim, "You should have said 'green balloons.'"
Jetton has long been a vocal opponent of gay rights. In 2007 he opposed he rewording of a Missouri statute imposing tougher penalties on child molesters. Fourteen words that made gay sex illegal in the state were removed to abide by an earlier U.S. Supreme Court ruling that made state bans on gay sex unconstitutional.
He said at the time, "Thanks to that deletion, it is now legal to engage in deviate sexual intercourse with someone of the same sex here in Missouri."
Just this morning Jetton announced that he would be closing down his political consulting firm to "deal with false allegations and spend time with his family," according to a statement.
