The National Institutes of Health are investigating allegations that Chicago's Howard Brown Health Center may have mishandled funds associated with a decades-long study of men with HIV, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Howard Brown, which is one of the country's largest LGBT heath care organizations, said in a statement Monday that it is cooperating fully with the investigation. The center severed ties with CEO Michael Cook and CFO Mark Joslyn earlier this month.
The study in question is called the Multi-Center AIDS Cohort Study, which has tracked thousands of men with HIV since the mid-1980s. Paul Fairchild, Howard Brown's interim CEO said in the statement: "We want to [assure] the community that the integrity of the research surrounding the MACS or any other study at Howard Brown has not been questioned."
