Republican congressional candidate Bob Giuda of New Hampshire tried to explain comments he made Monday that compared same-sex marriage to "men and sheep" and "women and dogs."
Giuda, a candidate for the Republican nomination for the second district seat, is opposed to marriage equality and the repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. He supports civil unions, which are being phased out in New Hampshire under the new marriage equality law.
According to WMUR, Giuda acknowledged that his comments to a group of students who challenged his position at Rivier College could have been chosen more carefully, but he defended his view.
"The point was, it's not to our good as a nation or society to institutionalize relationships that do not involve a man and a woman for the protection of a family," he said, according to WMUR.
