A Utah gay activist is leading the charge to have the only openly gay person elected to the Salt Lake City council ousted as executive director of the Utah AIDS Foundation.
Twenty-nine-year-old Richard Matthews has collected 165-plus supporters on a Facebook petition calling for Stan Penfold (pictured) to be replaced. Penfold says he has no plans to resign, and while the board is backing him up, chairman Shawn Jackson said he would like to speak with Matthews about his concerns.
"It's surprising to me that he has not contacted us" or Penfold, Jackson said.
Matthews, a former volunteer with the AIDS foundation, says Jackson has eliminated HIV/AIDS prevention services as infection rates climb across the state, tripling from 2000 to 2009, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. He says he thinks Penfold's work on the city council is shortchanging his work at the foundation.
