A protester at last week's fund-raiser for antigay New York state senator Ruben Diaz, Sr. said the lawmaker's lawyer called them "fags for Diaz."
Gay City News talked with activists who protested Diaz August 12 in the Bronx. Diaz, the most outspoken opponent of marriage equality in the senate, faces a Democratic primary challenger, Charlie Ramos. The protesters support Ramos and wanted to shame state Democrats who back the reelection bid of Diaz.
Kevin Douchkoff, a protester, told Gay City News that he heard Diaz's attorney Stanley K. Schlein say "fags for Diaz" as he entered the fund-raiser. Schlein did not respond to a request for comment from the newspaper.
Another attendee gave protesters the middle finger, but that's no different than the way former mayor David Dinkins treated hecklers last week at the birthday party for embattled congressman Charlie Rangel.
