Calling the visit an affront to the small island province's social values, an MP in the Faroe Islands will not be attending the upcoming state banquet for Iceland's gay prime minister, Johanna Sigurdardottir (pictured, left), and her wife.
The conservative politician, Jenis av Rava, brushed off the controversy, which was reported in Icelandic publications and the gay British website Pink News. In a statement on his website, Av Rava said of his decision not to attend, "I do not make a habit of going out in the evening unless my wife is also invited. I would much rather stay at home with her. This is not new behavior, it's been like this for years. No one should be surprised."
Sparsely populated and located in the north Atlantic Ocean between Iceland and Scotland, the Faroe Islands are an autonomous province of Denmark.
