A Canadian radio host has been reprimanded for implying that
16-year-old pop star Justin Bieber is gay and for making inappropriate
comments about his fans, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The Canadian Broadcasting Standards Council, the Canadian equivalent of
the FCC in the United States, has ruled that there's "no justification
for allegedly humorous references to children in sexual contexts" made
by Dean Blundell, a host on the Toronto FM station CFNY.
Last
October, Blundell tweeted about his dislike of Bieber's music, which
quickly escalated into a Twitter war with the singer's fans. Blundell
tweeted, "Save your energy for puberty or to fend off your dad tonight
while you're sleepin'."
The tweets became the topic of
conversation on Blundell's program, and the DJ referred to one
12-year-old fan as a future "chugger," which is slang for a male
prostitute. Numerous listeners complained about Blundell's comments,
before the council launched an investigation.
The CBSC announced
this week that Blundell's comments were "gratuitous and unnecessary"
and the penalty was to announce the decision twice on air during peak
listening hours.
