A Brooklyn shop owner who has been offering a 10% discount to lesbian moms at her maternity store says she has been receiving threatening calls since the sale was promoted on the website Brokelyn.com.
Karen Paperno, who is not gay, says callers have talked to her about everything from sexism to the sanctity of marriage.
Paperno says she is now afraid to be alone at her shop at night, but says she has no plans to take her sign down -- even if some of the callers have suggested she might be at risk for a discrimination suit.
"If she wants to offer a discount to a group she thinks is underprivileged, she's entitled to," discrimination lawyer Murray Schwartz told The Brooklyn Paper, adding that customers don't have the same rights as employees. "Retailers can basically do whatever they want."
