Major League Baseball has suspended Atlanta Braves pitching coach Roger McDowell, who was blasted last week for allegedly hurling antigay slurs at spectators attending a game in San Francisco between the Giants and the Braves.
McDowell was suspended for two weeks without pay Sunday, according to the Associated Press. The suspension is retroactive to Friday. He also was fined; the amount was not disclosed.
MLB commissioner Bud Selig said homophobic statements "simply cannot and will not be tolerated." He added, "I understand that Mr. McDowell is very contrite about his conduct, and hopefully this incident will be used to increase public awareness of the importance of sensitivity to others."
