CBS: Avoiding Legal Woes By Blurring Images

ADAM LAMBERT AMA 2 X390 (GETTY IMAGES) | Advocate.com

The possibility of legal action is what caused The Early Show on CBS to blur images of Adam Lambert's controversial performance on Wednesday morning.

A spokesperson for CBS told Extra.com that the the decision to blur Lambert simulating oral sex with a dancer and kissing a keyboardist — while not blurring another controversial awards show kiss between Madonna, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera — came after a lot of deliberation.

"We gave this some real thought," the rep said. "The Madonna image is very familiar and has appeared countless times including many times on morning television. The Adam Lambert image is a subject of great current controversy, has not been nearly as widely disseminated, and for all we know, may still lead to legal consequences."

However, Advocate senior editor Jeremy Kinser, who was interviewed by Extra, said the oral sex move may have been a bit much, but the kissing was innocuous.

"I think there's obviously a double standard when it comes to gay male entertainers," Kinser told Extra.com. "It's ridiculous they can show two women but can't show two men. I think it makes them look kind of silly. That's what's so ironic: They decided to put him on after Good Morning America canceled him, and they seem really hypocritical to blur the moment that has everybody talking."

I think the Adam Lambert kiss is fine, the oral sex move was inappropriate for regular tv, but okay, it happened, now lets move on.

Gay men and women everywhere should boycott Lambert's products, CDs, etc... He has done nothing to further our cause and in one act, has moved us backward. Until we understand it is moving 20% of the population that makes the difference, and that this wont happen with obscene, "accept my porn", "accept my vulgarity", in your face discretions as he displayed both in actions and his words. This is not what the vast majority of gay men and women want to see in the public standard...he doesnt represent our community.

ASSHOLES like him give the rest of the gay men such a BAD NAME!!! His "show" was plain LUDE!!! It is just filth that is trying to pass itself off as ART...not so! He's SO uncreative and talentless that he resorted to such overt sexual "dance-moves" he may have a nice voice...but he still has A LOT to learn about being an artist! rioboy13

I thought that America was all about freedom of expression - and freedom to all! I simply cannot understand why the world is looking towards America for leadership, when there are so many restrictions - even the expression of gay love or sensuality. Had it been straight - no one would have goven it any thought. I am sorry, but I cannot . I repeat I cannot respect USA any longer. The only thing that apparently is good for anything is Hypocrisy - and to that I say: No thank you!

Am I missing something? The show aired at 11 pm. When did that become prime time?

You have to take the two acts (the kiss and the simulated fellatio) and deal with them differently. In the case of the kiss Adam Lambert clearly exposed a double standard as he says and if this whole controversy hinged on that alone their would be reason for outcry from the GLBT community. This is not the case. Simulating fellatio during a primetime award show is in poor taste and the morning shows are justified in their backlash to Adam's poor judgment. GMA and the CBS early show have a reputation for being a show that presents a tasteful blend of news and entertainment. As such, when they see a performer they booked (to their mutual benefit) present a BDSM themed performance to a primetime television audience (including children) they have good reason to cancel a performance that could be equally inflammatory and damage the reputation of these shows just as Adam Lambert's performance tarnished the AMA's. It isn't discriminatory, it's about upholding certain standards.

This country is extremely homophobic. The media perpetuates a disdain for gays. We will continue to be oppressed until the media decides to portray us as equals. You can watch which anchor person handles certain stories. Also, you can tell that most are trying to make a name for themselves. The only thing good that I can write is that we are in the news. We have to be there nonstop until we are given equal rights. We will never be completely accepted by many people, but we should have equal treatment under the laws of this country. We work and we pay taxes. Adam Lambert is a hero for the gay community.

What legal consequences could there POSSIBLY be for the kiss? I could MAYBE see the FCC fining the network for the simulate fellatio if it had occurred earlier in the evening, but ABC and CBS both show daytime and prime-time series that contain same-sex kissing.

I think this dispels the constant lesbian complaint that they are more oppressed than gay men. Two women kissing is shown-it excites straight men. But males doing the same thing are still forbidden. And why does this mag print CBS's excuse as if it is true? The fact is all these shows are crap. Adam stood up very well. False virtue IS the greatest vice.
