Julianne Moore told reporters that antigay comments made by Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi are "unfortunate, archaic, and idiotic," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Berlusconi, a 74-year-old media tycoon turned political leader, is at the center of a scandal involving a 17-year-old girl that has led to calls for his resignation, stated it's "better to like beautiful girls than be gay."

"I think it's unfortunate, archaic and idiotic," Moore said to reporters at a press conference. "To hint or to say that there is something wrong with homosexuality ... it's embarrassing when people continue to perpetrate these untruths." Moore's comment drew applause.

Moore was in Rome to accept the International Rome Film Festival's Marcus Aurelius Award for lifetime achievement. She spoke to reporters during a press conference promoting her film The Kids Are All Right, in which she plays a lesbian parent.

"What children need is two loving parents," Moore said about parenting. "It doesn't matter if they are two moms, or two dads, or a mom and a dad."
