"Don't Say Gay" Passes in Tenn. Senate

State Sen. Stacey Campfield's proposed "Don't Say Gay" bill passed the Tennessee senate Friday with a 20-10 vote. The measure passed after an amendment was added to restrict the ban only to lessons related to homosexuality, and not all speech, specifically unplanned discussions in classrooms.

Democrats in the senate pointed out that the state already bans sexual education in elementary and middle school instruction. Sen. Andy Berke said the bill was unnecessary, and only being passed "just to pass it," The Tennessean reports.

A companion bill in the house of representatives has not advanced out of committee. Earlier this month, Rep. Bill Dunn said the process started too late in the year, since the house education subcommittee has closed until 2012.

I thought America was supposed to be land of the free and home of the brave. Not 'let's worship a book and discriminate against others for bloody stupid reasons'! This makes me feel physically sick. This is just another step back. Believe it or not, Tennessee, kids NEED to learn about these things! Hiding your child from learning about gays won't make your child straight if it is gay!! People need to learn and love their children no matter what their sexuality or gender identity is! Don't hide them in the shadows and make them think they're 'wrong', because they are not! It's short of child abuse if you ask me!

This is part of a nationwide effort by Republicans to push through state-level legislation while they still can. They can feel the clocking ticking down to the 2012 elections.
