Nigeria now has the world's third-highest number of HIV-positive residents, behind only South Africa and India, with 4 million Nigerians estimated to be HIV-positive, AllAfrica.com reports. AIDS officials in the country say Nigeria needs to adopt a multisectoral approach to help lower HIV transmission rates in the country. The United States has pledged to provide antiretroviral medications to 350,000 HIV-positive people in the country and to provide other HIV-related services to an estimated 1.7 million Nigerians. The U.S. Agency for International Development also plans to provide Nigeria's National Action Committee on AIDS with logistic and technical support to coordinate HIV prevention and treatment efforts in the country.
