The Bella Abzug
Leadership Institute has announced that it will host the
"Freedom on Our Terms" Women's Conference on November
10-11 at Hunter College in New York City.
Television
personality Rosie O'Donnell will present a keynote speech,
and feminist icon Gloria Steinem will participate in a
panel discussion. Other speakers include Carol
Jenkins, president of The Women's Media Center; Lupe
Anguiano, delegate to the 1977 National Women's Conference;
Marie Wilson, president of the White House Project; Liz
Abzug, founder of the Bella Abzug Leadership
Institute; Ellie Smeal, president of the Feminist
Majority Foundation; and Kim Gandy, president of the
National Organization for Women.
BALI has taken
the lead in organizing the "Freedom on Our Terms"
conference with the assistance of over 50 cosponsoring
women's and girls' organizations. The conference will
include roundtable discussions, plenary sessions,
workshops, issue caucuses, and music.
The conference
celebrates the 30th anniversary of the first National
Women's Conference, first held in Houston in 1977.
Participants at the 2007 conference will examine the
26 planks from the original National Plan of Action
adopted in 1977, which dealt with all aspects of women's
lives; boldly strategize to update the platform to the
present; and identify and target goals for the future.
Hunter College is
located at 68th Street and Lexington Avenue in New
York City. For more information on the conference, go to www.abzuginstitute.org/news.htm. (The
