Out athlete Amelie Mauresmo announced Thursday that she is retiring from professional tennis, saying that she no longer had the desire to train or compete.

"I had to make a decision, which became evident in the last few months and weeks," Mauresmo said in a heartfelt press conference, according to the Associated Press. "When you grew older, it's more difficult to stay at the top."

Mauresmo announced in October that she would skip her final two tournaments of the season, causing speculation that she would soon retire. The French tennis pro was ranked number 1 in tennis in 2004, was a two-time grand slam winner (2006 Wimbledon and Australian Open), and was silver medalist in the 2004 Olympic games in Athens.

"I dreamt of this career, I dreamt of winning a Grand Slam title," she said. "I lifted trophies in every city in the world and I lived 10 magical and unbelievable years."
