President Barack Obama praised the House of Representatives for passing legislation introduced by Rep. Patrick Murphy that would end the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy.
The House passed the measure 250-175. Obama says the legislation will give the military "the clarity and certainty it deserves."
The legislation faces stiff competition in the Senate, though Maine Republican Susan Collins sponsored that bill and, on Wednesday, Sen. Olympia Snowe said she'd back repeal.
She previously voted no when DADT repeal was attached to the Defense Authorization Bill.
Senate majority leader Harry Reid is not expected to schedule a vote on "don't ask, don't tell" repeal until early next week.
