An out director's depiction of racial divisions in the 1960s Deep South is among nine films nominated for this year's Academy Award for Best Picture. The nominations were announced Tuesday morning.

The Help, directed by Tate Taylor and based on the 2009 novel by Kathryn Stockett, joins eight other films in the Best Picture race, including Martin Scorsese's Hugo, which led the field with 11 nominations, as well as Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris and Steven Spielberg's War Horse. The awards will be presented February 26 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

Glenn Close received a Best Actress nomination for her gender-bending role in Albert Nobbs, in which she plays a woman in 19th-century Ireland who lives as a male servant in order to survive. Christopher Plummer, who bagged a Golden Globe earlier this month for his portrayal of an elderly man who comes out as gay following his wife's death in Beginners, was nominated for the Best Supporting Sctor award.

Meryl Streep's turn as Margaret Thatcher in gay director Phyllida Lloyd's The Iron Lady earned her a 17th Oscar nomination.

Other films with LGBT themes that received Golden Globe nods were shut out, including J. Edgar.
