Al Jazeera America anchor David Shuster got more than he bargained for this week when interviewing a Texas conservative about "ex-gay" therapy and marriage equality.

After Shuster discussed so-called conversion therapy with Cathie Adams, former chair of the Texas Republican Party (she endorses the practice, as does the state party), he asked if she would abide by a U.S. Supreme Court ruling for marriage equality.

Instead of answering his question, she asked, "Do you think that a man's body is meant for penetration by another man, or is a man's body meant to be in union with a woman, whose body is built for that behavior?"

Shuster, trying not to laugh, put the question about the Supreme Court to her again, and she replied, "I am not going to throw away the scriptures, the millennia of history, in order to accept the judicial fiat of a few judges."

"We'll take that as a no," Shuster said.

Watch the interview below. Adams's comment about bodies and penetration comes toward the end of the segment, marked by numerous antigay remarks on her part.

Trudy Ring is The Advocate’s senior politics editor and copy chief. She has been a reporter and editor for daily newspapers and LGBTQ+ weeklies/monthlies, trade magazines, and reference books. She is a political junkie who thinks even the wonkiest details are fascinating, and she always loves to see political candidates who are groundbreaking in some way. She enjoys writing about other topics as well, including religion (she’s interested in what people believe and why), literature, theater, and film. Trudy is a proud “old movie weirdo” and loves the Hollywood films of the 1930s and ’40s above all others. Other interests include classic rock music (Bruce Springsteen rules!) and history. Oh, and she was a Jeopardy! contestant back in 1998 and won two games. Not up there with Amy Schneider, but Trudy still takes pride in this achievement.
