Thousands took to the streets for the Atlanta Pride Parade on Sunday and for a chance to cheer on Orange Is the New Black actor Lea DeLaria as the honorary Grand Marshall. The 44th annual parade festivities began at 1 p.m. near the the Civic Center MARTA Station and wound up at Piedmont Park. It has found new vectors, new reservoirs, and new opportunities to replicate. The recent Berlin Pride attack and the CDC shooting in Atlanta about a year ago that shattered a window in my office make one thing painfully clear: we, as a country, are still refusing to treat hate with the urgency of a public health emergency.
