Argentine Couple Weds

Two men from Argentina tied the knot Monday, becoming the first same-sex couple to marry in Latin America, USA Today reports.

Alex Freye, 39, and Jose Maria di Bello, 41, first tried to get married on December 1, World AIDS Day, after a judge ruled that Buenos Aires officials must extend marriage equality. But the men’s ceremony was put on hold when a second judge determined that they had to wait for the outcome of a supreme court appeal of the earlier decision.

Monday’s ceremony took place in the registry office in Ushuaia after Governor Fabiana Rios overruled a civil registrar who initially refused to wed the couple. “We knew the governor was a person who sympathized with this cause,” Di Bello said. “It’s a step toward judicial equality for every man and woman” in Argentina.

Earlier this month Mexico City's city council passed a bill to legalize marriage equality there. The bill is currently awaiting the expected signature from Mayor Marcelo Ebrard.

I think it was just a headline confusion, I think most gay and lesbian Americans know Mexico City came first. Still it's great this is happening in Argentina for a number of reasons and although not fully recognized still a step forward. They're a very handsome couple. Best of love and luck to you.

Freyre and DiBello are the first real couple to marry because of a judicial decision, but gay marriage is not still approved in Argentina. Mexico City has approved the bill permitting it, but is it not yet "working". Firts weddings in Mexico are foreseen in February, more or less. Thank you and sorry for my English, I'm writing from Spain.

People you have to see more real NEWS, I think this site is misleading you. Mexico City is the first LatinAmerica City that has legally approved Gay Marriage! Argentina has still NOT approved this law. You guys have to really verify your sources. And for they guy in TJ that posted that awful comment there are plenty of gay men in Mexico City. Why do you think there was a law approved? Dumb-butt!!

I'm proud that my birth country is the first in Latin America to wed gay people. My partner and I had a civil union in Vermont in 2000, but we are hopeful that things change here in Utah.
