Ellen Calls for End to Bullying, Suicide

ELLEN DEGENERES VIDEO STILL X390 (WB) | ADVOCATE.COM

Ellen DeGeneres calls for an end to the recent epidemic of bullying and gay teen suicide in a video released today.

"I am devastated over the death of 18-year-old Tyler Clementi," DeGeneres says. "He was outed as being gay on the Internet and he killed himself."

DeGeneres also mentions the three other deaths of gay teens that have been reported this month, saying that four lives lost is a crisis. "Something must be done," she says. "This needs to be a wake-up call to everyone that teenage bullying and teasing is an epidemic in this country, and the death rate is climbing. We have an obligation to change this."

Ellen "appears" gung ho when it comes to gay bullying, but seems to take little interest in straight teens that are bullied, sometimes to death. I say this with conviction, as I am with a children's charity called Thursday's Child, and we have been around for more than 28 years, and have the only hotline for bullying in North America. Our bulling hotline number is the only one listed with toll-free directory nationwide. But when we have phoned over to the Ellen Show and to Telepictures, we have been met with disinterest. Obviously, the only interest Ellen has is in her ratings. And she is not alone. Dr. Phil and Oprah stand proudly beside her in their quest to be able gain more viewers and charge more for their commercial time.

I sent a letter to the Board Commissioner of the Snoop Dogg youth football league and still no response. I did get a voice mailed which i saved from coach saying he heard about my e-mail and if i was concern about our safety that maybe i should remove my son from the league. my son shouldnt be the one to have to leave. I was bullied in High School as well. That 25 years ago ... it just shows that kids HAVE NOT CHANGED ... it shows that INTOLERANCE is TAUGHT by PARENTS. With today's technology, and how we've evolved as a society how is it possible that racism and intolerance is STILL a problem? The answer is pretty obvious ... the old fuddy-duddies who REFUSE to accept CHANGE, and STILL RETAIN their hatred of anything DIFFERENT, and TEACH this to anyone who'll listen!

@Kathy "I also believe no one should be forced to throw away their own beliefs because of a popular cause. If we all live our lives the best we can and help each other along the way, without browbeating others to like how we live, this world would be a better place." The majority does not have the legal or moral right to terrorize a minority and push them to suicide. If the act is a proximate cause it is a criminal offense and I would be the first one to support a very, very long jail sentence with an enhanced punishment as a hate crime.

This is exactly the kind of hatred and cyberbullying that we need to denounce. Ritchie, you have provided another example how a cold heart coupled with ignorance breeds hatred which then leads to violent (and often self-destructive) acts. Thank you, Ellen, for your heartfelt compassion and message. Bullying is a tragedy. It affects us all.

No one should have to go through bullying and torment every day. However, I doubt that it will ever stop. If is it not this cause, it will be another. The goal should be to make all people feel strong enough to live their lives without hurting others. That said, I also believe no one should be forced to throw away their own beliefs because of a popular cause. If we all live our lives the best we can and help each other along the way, without browbeating others to like how we live, this world would be a better place.

Whoever Ritchie is, HE is the type of loser this country or world needs rid of, not the type of individual Ellen is defending. How Ritchie became aware of this horrible act, or all the countless, needless deaths because of this type of behavior is building. Ritchie and all people who think this way should be ashamed of their hatred of people and their ways. Shame.

Thank you, Ellen, for your moving statement. But I agree with Matt that someone like you needs to connect the dots for your large audience. The suicides are a result of the way our entire culture continues to demonize gay people. A stupid law like DADT says that gay men and lesbians are so awful that it would be unacceptable to ask straight people to knowingly associate with us. And the fact that Congress refuses to repeal this law speaks volumes. When the Roman Catholic Church and the Mormon Church spends tens of millions of dollars sponsoring referenda on same-sex marriage and fighting other gay rights, they are saying that we are "less than" and don't deserve equal rights. And that doesn't even encompass the truly evil people who hate us. Only when we come to grips with the homophobia that infects our society will young people be able to grow up free from torment and self hatred.
