Comedian Kate McKinnon could be the first out lesbian cast member on NBC's Saturday Night Live if a report Wednesday from Deadline is correct.
McKinnon might be remembered from her time as a cast member on Logo's Big Gay Sketch Show, and an actress in the web series, Vag Magazine, about a fictional feminist publication of the same name. She's a longtime performer with the Upright Citizens Brigade in New York City.
Deadline reports that McKinnon and six other performers were auditioned by SNL creator Lorne Michaels, and that McKinnon will debut on the April 7 show hosted by Sofia Vergara.
The show has been on the air since 1975 and is in its 37th season. The first openly gay man to be cast was Terry Sweeney in 1985. Comedian Danitra Vance, who died at the age of 35 in 1994 of cancer, was a lesbian and a member of the 11th season. Outside of SNL, she had performed lesbian characters. But it's McKinnon who is being reported in several places as the show's first openly lesbian cast member despite Vance, who was the show's first black woman.
