A bill that would ensure the state of California protects its gay and lesbian seniors was passed in the state assembly on Wednesday. The Older Californians Equality and Protection Act would ensure that the California Department of Aging accounts for the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender elders in its services.
"California's LGBT seniors deserve to live their golden years with dignity and stability," said openly gay assemblyman Mark Leno, who authored the bill. "AB2920 will require the state to survey their unique needs so we can better address them with culturally competent and appropriate services."
Recent studies have called attention to the lack of services for LGBT seniors. In areas from housing to health care to relationship and asset protection, these individuals are vulnerable to discrimination and often have limited legal, medical, and social resources.
The measure passed on a 48-32 vote. (The Advocate)
