Police in Palmerston North, New Zealand, have issued a warning that a man who they suspect is gay has been cruising the streets in his car at night in search of people to assault sexually, reported the New Zealand Herald on Thursday.

This note of caution comes after the sexual assault of a man who was offered a ride from a local pub early June 22. Police said the man was held at knife-point and driven to a remote location before being attacked, reported the Herald.

The offender was described as a Maori man in his 40s, approximately 6 feet tall with a solid build and a well-spoken manner. His car is a light-colored Nissan with gray and red upholstery.

Detective constable James Bugg said publicity about the attack had encouraged a couple of other men to contact police to say they may have encountered the same man in the past, the Herald reported. (The Advocate)
