Attend Gay March Amid Heavy Security

Hundreds of gays and lesbians have marched through Bucharest, Romania, in a show of pride. Thousands of people gathered along the two-mile route. Some spectators cheered; others jeered. Hundreds of police patrolled the march. The atmosphere was tense, but there were no reports of arrests.

Thousands of people gathered along the two-mile route. Some spectators cheered; others jeered.

Hundreds of police patrolled the march. The atmosphere was tense, but there were no reports of arrests. At a similar event last year about 140 people were arrested.

Earlier Saturday, supporters of the New Right antigay movement marched to protest homosexuality.

The Romanian Orthodox Church, the dominant church in the country, opposes homosexuality. But the government decriminalized homosexuality in 2001. (AP)
