Same-sex couples are planning on exchanging vows all over Italy this fall in the hope they can one day be recognized by the state, according to pride organizers on Tuesday.
The vows, which will have no legal standing, will be called a "public pledge of union," reports the Italian news organization ANSA.
The head of Italy's biggest gay group, Arcigay, Aurelio Mancuso, plans to have ceremonies in more than 50 cities October 18-19, and hopes to eventually set up a registry in every Italian city.
The upcoming pride celebration on Saturday will be led by Europe's first transgender member of parliament, Vladimir Luxuria. Luxuria, who has not undergone sex-change surgery, is an Italian actress turned politician who lives as a female.
The event will be held in the city of Bologna in central Italy, with attendance expected to be in the thousands. (The Advocate)
