After receiving criticism from LGBT activists for switching churches, Dallas mayor Tom Leppert issued a statement late Monday to reassure constituents that he embraces diversity.
"During my time as Mayor I have made a point of reaching out to and including all communities in our diverse City and I am very proud of my record," said Leppert, reports the Dallas Voice. "Where my family attends church is a personal matter and one that is entered into prayerfully."
The Texan mayor decided to leave Park Cities Baptist Church and join First Baptist Church of Dallas. Leppert's new congregation is led by the Reverend Robert Jeffress, a prominent antigay voice in north Texas.
The decision, paired with a quote by Leppert in the Dallas Morning Star referring to Jeffress as a "good guy," caused bloggers to question the mayor's dedication to LGBT issues.
