Antigay Senate Candidate Sees Baldwin as Main Competition

Should Rep. Tammy Baldwin run for the U.S. Senate (by all accounts a likely scenario), the Wisconsin congresswoman may face an antigay challenger vying for retiring Senator Herb Kohl's seat.

Former Republican congressman Mark Neumann, who lost his 2010 gubernatorial bid in the state to now-Gov. Scott Walker, announced his candidacy Monday -- and sees Baldwin as his main competition.

"I believe our opponent is Tammy Baldwin and I believe it is essential that we bring Tammy Baldwin's record to the forefront," Neumann said on a conservative radio show.

Gay Politics notes Neumann's anti-LGBT voting record and long history of homophobic remarks. Case in point: "If I was elected God for a day, homosexuality wouldn't be permitted, but nobody's electing me God," Neumann told The New York Times in 1996. (Read the Gay Politics post here.)
