N.Y. Times on Trump's LGBT Rights Record: It's a "Fallacy"

Trump

The president is a foe of equality, the paper of record writes plainly.

The New York Times published an editorial Monday blasting Donald Trump's LGBT rights record, saying he's done nothing but undermine equality during his three months in office.

The Gray Lady lays out the case that Trump -- contrary to predictions from LGBT Republicans during the 2016 campaign -- has been disastrous for LGBT rights, reversing the progress made under President Obama. "It's been a catastrophe," Mara Keisling of the National Center for Transgender Equality tells the newspaper.

Even though Trump deigned to hold a Pride flag during a campaign rally, he's put a team in power that makes George W. Bush's administration look like the Human Rights Campaign. From Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price to Attorney General Jeff Sessions, nearly all of Trump's hires have not simply been silent on LGBT rights, they've been vocal opponents.

The editorial offers one hopeful point -- the courts. Since Trump took office, judges have issued rulings protecting LGBT people from discrimination at work and in housing.
