Osteen: Gays Aren't "God's Best"

JOEL OSTEEN JOY BEHAR THE VIEW X390 (GRAB) | ADVOCATE.COM

View cohost Whoopi Goldberg asked megachuch pastor Joel Osteen whether gay people are welcome at his Lakewood Church in Houston. Osteen said he welcomes people of different religions and sexual orientations, but that "homosexuality is not God's best."

Osteen added that he loves everyone, that some of his closest friends are gay, and that they tend to be "some of the nicest people in the world."

Joy Behar, who also has her own show on CNN Headline News, asked Osteen whether he thinks homosexuality is a choice. "It's not something you pick to be, because it's very difficult to be gay in this society," she said.

"I know it isn't, but I try to love them and treat them with respect," Osteen said.

I was surprised to hear Joel O's comment about homosexuality not being G-d's best. It's disappointing because Joel O is such an influential and otherwise positive public figure. It's also the subversive quality of his message that's disturbing. I would have felt better hearing him say his plain truth, rather than try to soften it with conjecture. He's preaching hate, no matter how he spins it. I'd like to believe that his apparent wincing during the interview had more to do with his discomfort in preaching hate, than what it probably really was, which is his discomfort in exposing his real message of hate. There isn't a person alive, who has the right to judge in that way. Love is love and it's sacred. Learn to "Love from within".

For someone who has engaged in a homosexual act(s) to call himself gay is to condemn himself. Most people accept condemnation quicker than they accept God's mercy. God forgives and restores. Don't condemn yourself because of a mistake or a series of mistakes. Don't drag yesterday's failures into today. Don't carry around that baggage and sour your future. You can't do anything about your past but you can about your future. The moment you ask God for forgiveness you are forgiven and redeemed. Your past is erased, your future is sweet. Receive God's mercy and move forward. "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." (Romans 8:1)

Osteen is a hick pig making millions off "the bible". I wonder how long it will be before "God's worst" is caught with his own pants down. Religion is a mental illness, as we see from the religionist posters here.

I just know I'm going to get flack for this, but at the risk of being pedantic may I point out that Osteen DIDN'T say "gays are not God's best", but rather that "homosexuality" is not God's best. That is a critical difference (after all, how many gay activists correctly point out that being gay involves more than what one does in bed). I'll also point out that he said he tries to show respect for everyone (including gays). I'd say that's considerably better than what the gay community receives from the likes of Dobson, Robertson, etc. Maybe Osteen didn't phrase things in the best way (the "some of my best friends" canard), but it appears he's not as judgmental as some of you seem to feel. In politics as in life, we shouldn't "let the best crowd out the good". His attitude appears to be far better than most of the "religious right". Besides, as a Jew I don't believe Christianity is "God's best", but I respect the right of a Christian to be Christian!

Another huckster dumping on gay people. How long will it be before the crying "I have sinned" confession that he wants two dollar prostitutes to piss on his hayseed face? The fools who follow him should lose their money
