We're in the midst of LGBT Health Month, a time to take stock of the many health issues specific to our community. While we have plenty of people trying to do harm to us because of our sexual orientation or gender identity, we often don't do ourselves any favors when it comes to self care. Here are the bad habits we should have given up last century:
1. We tan too much.
Gay and bisexual men are three times more likely to use indoor tanning, according to a newly released study by the University of California, San Francisco. And everyone knows those machines increase risk of skin cancer. So, the study found that gay and bi men in the U.S. are twice as likely as straight men to develop the disease.
Heavy drinking and binge boozing is more prevalent among lesbians than straight women, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Bisexual women also report more hazardous drinking than their straight and lesbian counterparts. Binge drinkers run the risk of liver, pancreatic, and esophageal cancers.
