Darienne Lake is sharing her cancer survivor story.

The RuPaul's Drag Race season 6 alumnus spoke with SurvivorNet about her diagnosis of melanoma, which occurred after the 48-year-old performer discovered a mole on her leg during quarantine.

Lake's sister, upon seeing a photo of the mole, encouraged her to get it checked by a dermatologist, who ordered a biopsy. The surgery occurred two weeks after the results.

"A week later, [the doctor] called me and he said, 'You're in luck. It's great. Great news. It has not spread. And we were able to get any of the cancer that was in there,'" Lake recounted in the video interview.

Her experience has inspired her to give hope to others struggling with illness.

"We're all in this together. No matter how bad it is, even if your diagnosis is much worse than mine, you are going to pull through it," Lake said in the interview. "You're going to be one of those people who can then share your message with the world on how you've survived and thrived."

Lake said that being bullied for her weight as a young person helped "create a shell ... and the drag actually helps to make a really pretty shell," which gave her the strength to persevere through tough times.

To SurvivorNet, Lake also said that finding a way to "relax and keep my mind busy" was essential in her own journey. "Even just scrolling through TikTok and funny, cute boys who want to do a dance. Just whatever you need to do to get your mind off of this heavy situation," she said.
