To highlight stories about sex education, HIV and sexually transmitted disease prevention, and the need for condom dispensers on campus, the editors of the University of Oklahoma's student newspaper on Monday affixed a condom on the front page of each edition of that day's newspaper, the Daily Oklahoman reports. About 10,000 condoms were distributed with the newspaper.
Staff members say they were not trying to encourage or condone sexual activity by passing out the condoms. "We are hoping to encourage students, faculty, and staff to practice safer sex if they decide to have sex at all," says an editorial explaining the condom distribution.
Daily Oklahoman managing editor Tres Savage worked with Planned Parenthood, the Regional AIDS Intercommunity Network, and the university's health sciences center to obtain the condoms for the project. (Advocate.com)
