The National
Sexuality Resource Center is sponsoring an event on
November 2 featuring two former U.S. surgeons general to
address sexual literacy among young people and
minorities. David Satcher and Jocelyn Elders will call
for concrete action in response to disparities in sexual
health as well as announce the new Center of Excellence for
Sexual Health at the Morehouse School of Medicine in
Atlanta.
The event will
pose discussion concerning the 40,000 new cases of HIV
each year and 19 million new sexually transmitted
infections, half of which involve those ages 15 to 24.
Other notable
speakers at the event, which will take place in San
Francisco at the Palace Hotel, include National
Sexuality Resource Center Director Gilbert Herdt,
Director Deborah Tolman of the Center for Research on
Gender and Sexuality, and Bishop Yvette Flunder of the City
of Refuge United Church of Christ. (The
