A new poll
suggests that the majority of Australians support
same-sex relationships. The Newspoll survey reports that 52%
of Aussies agree that the federal government
should introduce a new law that formally recognizes
same-sex relationships, while 37% disagree, and
11% said they didn't know.
But a gay rights lobbyist says that despite the
encouraging numbers, the government isn't going to
act. New South Wales Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby
spokesman David Scamell told the Sydney Star
Observer, "It's quite clear from speaking
with the [prime minister's] office that their position
won't be changing in terms of how the
government deals with same-sex relationships and same-sex families."
On Sunday the group plans to make its case a lot
more visual. Along with several prominent political
figures, it will plant 10,000 pink paper hearts
reading "All love is equal" in Sydney's Victoria
Park. (Sirius OutQ News)
