Saying she would
not march in Friday's St. Patrick's Day Parade unless
gays can join her and "celebrate our heritage," New
York City council speaker Christine Quinn, a
self-described proud Irish-American lesbian, declared
she would not participate in the annual event.
The New York Post reports that Quinn said
she had reached out to leaders within the Irish and
LGBT communities about what she called "inclusive
participation." But parade chairman John Dunleavy once
again said that gays would not be permitted to march,
saying organizers weren't about to give gays reason to end
their 15-year boycott of the city's oldest parade.
