Detroit's city council amended its nondiscrimination law Wednesday to include protections for gender expression. The amendment was passed 8-1, according to a press release from the Triangle Foundation, an LGBT advocacy group for the state of Michigan.

"The Detroit city council believes that it is a necessity for every Detroit citizen to be protected from all forms of discrimination, injustice, and harm," city council president Kenneth Cockrel Jr. said in the statement.

Triangle Foundation interim executive director Kate Runyon said, "The city council has shown tremendous leadership and courage today, and we congratulate them on this declaration of the city's openness and commitment to inclusion." (The Advocate)
