Attorneys for the
accused murderer of 15-year-old Lawrence King obtained
school records and other confidential documents about the
victim on Thursday. Attorney William Quest subpoenaed
the records to help him prepare his defense of
14-year-old client Brandon McInerney, according to the Ventura County [Calif.] Star.
Only those who
are directly involved with McInerney's defense will have
access to King's records, which disclose his behavior in
school and at Casa Pacifica, a shelter for abused and
neglected children where King lived as a ward of the
state. King told his friends that he was gay and wore
makeup, jewelry, and high-heeled shoes to school.
King was shot and
killed during English class at his junior high school
in Oxnard in February. McInerney faces 51 years to life if
convicted of murder and hate-crime charges.
King's family is
now suing the Hueneme School District and Ventura County
for failing to protect their son. Dawn and Gregory King have
filed injury claims and are seeking unspecified
damages related to the shooting, according to Gay
City News. The Kings say the school and the
county failed to protect Lawrence by not enforcing a dress
code. (The Advocate)
