Red, the play about famed painter Mark Rothko's career crossroads in the 1950s, and Memphis, the musical dealing with race relations and popular music in the same era, took the top spots at the 64th annual American Theatre Wing's Tony Awards Sunday evening in New York.
Advocate cover subject Sean Hayes hosted the event at Radio City Music Hall, giving an engaging performance throughout the show, despite its many technical glitches. He was also nominated for his performance in Promises Promises, also starring Kristen Chenoweth.
Among the winners was La Cage aux Folles, for Best Revival of a Music. The musical, starring Kelsey Grammer and Douglas Hodge as a gay couple, who must hide their lives to save face for their son's fiancee's conservative parents. Hodge also won for best Leading Actor in a Musical.
Choreographer Bill T. Jones won for his work in the musical Fela!, which explores the life of artist Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
Broadway veteran David Hyde Pierce was honored with the Isabelle Stevenson Award for his philanthropic work in Alzheimer's Disease research.
