Mary’s House provides a safe living space for LGBTQ+ seniors

The Washington D.C.-based housing project is a first of it's kind.

Washington, D.C., has its first affordable housing space for older LGBTQ+ folks. Having broken ground in July 2023, the building is ready to welcome its first tenants and is currently taking applications.

Sitting in southeast D.C.’s Fort Dupont neighborhood, the complex boasts 15 single-occupancy residential units and 5,000 square feet of shared communal living space that includes a communal kitchen and dining room, according to Mary’s House for Older Adults, the nonprofit organization behind the residence.

The residence will offer Americans With Disabilities Act adaptable units, health support for tenants, and wellness programs.

“It is our duty to ensure that all people regardless of gender identity live with dignity and have access to the support and services they need to age in peace,” Mary’s House founder, president, and CEO Imani Woody said in a statement on the organization’s website.

LGBTQ+ older adults, especially transgender, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming people, often face barriers to housing, according to SAGE: Advocacy and Services for LGBTQ+ Elders. Because of transphobia and homophobia, many older adults hide their sexual orientation or gender identity. About half of older adult same-sex couples report facing discrimination while searching for housing, and around 90 percent of trans, nonbinary, and gender-noncomforming people say they fear discrimination in their search.

“Our mission extends beyond providing housing,” Mary’s House states on its website. “We strive to build welcoming communities that address affordability, accessibility, and the unique needs of LGBTQ/SGL [same-gender-loving] older adults. Through health and wellness programs, connections to community services, and advocacy efforts, Mary’s House for Older Adults endeavors to ensure that all elders, regardless of identity, can enjoy fulfilling and secure lives in their golden years.”
