Australian Gay Marriage Bill Rejected

AUSTRALIA MAP X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

The Australian senate rejected a marriage equality bill Thursday, just days before this weekend’s large Mardi Gras celebration in Sydney.

According to The Age, the bill was defeated 45 to five, with one third of the senators absent from the vote in conscientious objection.

“But some of the senators who were absent from the chamber are uncomfortable with their party's official policies opposing a move to let gay couples marry,” reported The Age.

Marriage equality advocates interpreted the absenteeism as tacit support for their cause.

In my opinion all religion should be abolished, it has been the biggest ever cause of hatred and wars for so many years. Having said that, I am not a supporter of any form of gay marriage or civil partnership. Just let people do their own 'thing' without any interference, especially from the church or politicians, providing it doesn't harm anybody else. Chris.

What a crock. As law abiding tax payers we have to wait for permission to be equal?? Can I stop paying tax until I have the same rights as my neighbour? I doubt it. The church has Australia by it's rapidly shrinking balls.

Guys, stop the bickering. I am an Australian, I live in Australia, and am in a happy Gay relationship of 18 years. I have a lot of rights that my "straight" counter parts have, and agree with a lot of comments that Australia is a safe, gay Friendly country. there are a lot of laws pertaining to discrimination here that protect me as an individual, but the need for me to rush out after 18 years and get married to the man I have spent my life with, is a non-issue. It is truly the happy ones in long term relationships who really dont care weather we are entitled to marry or not. We are happy with the status quo. Get over it guys. The world will change when it is ready, not when someone wants it to. Thats when you get the problems

@ Joseph in Montgomery - The California legislature DID pass same-sex marriage legislation prior to Prop 8. In fact, but they passed it TWICE. Each time the bill was vetoed by that clown Schwarzenegger.

To all those people who keep saying Australia is so homophobic and that it should be boycotted: you have no idea. Us Australian gays may not have marriage equality and adoption rights in all states but we're still equal in almost every other respect in every single state. Australian people are more gay-friendly than Americans and many Europeans, even if our govt is more conservative than the people themselves. I'd rather be gay in Australia than most other countries.

@Tyler: I'm sorry, but your comment about how bad Alabama is seems so full of irony given your alleged "hometown." IMS, San Luis Obispo is in California, where the people--just last year--voted to ban same-sex marriage, and, again IMS, California's chicken-shit legislature couldn't manage to get a bill passed to approve statewide same-sex marriage and the state's chicken-shit governator constantly pressed for a popular vote on the issue. Yeah, Alabama is soooo much worse than California.

It seems the parade route needs to be amended to the Senate offices, so constituents can face their representatives, whose salaries and family benefits are paid by their tax dollars. Let's start a world-wide revolution and DEMAND OUR EQUAL CIVIL RIGHTS NOW!
