Rufus Wainwright's first opera, Prima Donna, won't grace the Metropolitan Opera as expected.

Rufus Wainwright's first opera, Prima Donna, will not be performed at the Metropolitan Opera as expected. The New York opera company had commissioned Wainwright to create a work that would "appeal to the largest possible American audience," reports the Los Angeles Times.Prima Donna, however, is completely in French.

The French-Canadian singer insisted that his first opera be in French and be presented as soon as possible. The Met had scheduled to introduce the opera during its 2014 season.

"They work on that sort of scale; I wanted to get it out as soon as possible, because I'm an impatient pop star," Wainwright told The New York Times.

Instead of continuing with the Met, Wainwright will debut his opera -- which revolves around an opera singer -- at the Manchester International Festival in England next July. (The Advocate)
