News that Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka are expecting twins has sparked speculation about celebrities who unlike Harris are closeted and have children through surrogates.
E! Online fielded a question from a reader who asked, "What about all the closeted gay actors out there? How many of them might have secret surrogate babies with their secret partners?"
Columnist Leslie Gornstein sought the opinion of a Los Angeles surrogate agency leader, who said she had never encountered the situation. E! Online columnist Ted Casablanca, consulted by his colleague Gornstein, sounded satisfied with that assessment and called it all the more reason to celebrate Harris and Burtka for being out, proud, and expecting.
"Most are much more interested in covering up their homosexuality, not procreating," he said. "Most gay couples don't make it long enough to even want to do this. That's why what Neil Patrick Harris is doing is a watershed moment."
