A British businessman is being hunted by local police because he allegedly infected his partner with HIV.

Mark James, 47, formerly of Burgess Hill, has been on the run for almost a month after failing to appear in court. Police are charging him with causing grievous bodily harm for having unprotected sex with his partner after James knew he had HIV.

James had shown "total disregard" for authority, detective Mike Sunman told the Yorkshire Post. "The victim has shown great courage and strength in supporting a police prosecution while being treated for the virus."

Police, who won't name the victim for legal reasons, first came upon the crime when they investigated allegations of domestic violence made by James's partner. (The Advocate)
