His
administration may be reeling from various scandals, but
George W. Bush found time on Monday to
praise Marilyn Musgrave, the antigay U.S.
congresswoman from Colorado who has fought for a
constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. The
president made an early campaign fund-raising stop in
Colorado for Musgrave.
He helped raise nearly a half-million dollars
for the two-term congresswoman, whose seat is
considered vulnerable. Her margin of victory in 2004
dipped significantly from her first congressional win. While
the president's comments focused mostly on Iraq and
illegal immigration, he did salute Musgrave for
preserving the "sanctity of marriage."
"We supported a constitutional amendment to make
sure that activist judges do not redefine traditional
marriage. And I'm proud of your support of that
important piece of legislation, and the people of this
district should send her back to Washington, D.C., because
she shares the same values as most people in
Colorado."
About 500 people
protested the event. Progress Now Action sponsored a
truck that circled the hotel that hosted the fund-raiser
carrying a satirical billboard that read, "Stop Gay
Marriage Now So Osama Doesn't Get Away." (Nancy
