A Nampa, Idaho,
man is trying to have The Joy of Sex and The
Joy of Gay Sex pulled from the local library's
shelves. After Randy Jackson was alerted to the books'
presence by the 15-year-old son of a friend, he asked the
Nampa Public Library board on two occasions to have
the books removed, and both times he was denied, the
Associated Press reports.
Now Jackson is appealing to the Nampa city
council, which took no action on the matter Monday but
urged the library board to reconsider its decision to
keep the books at its next meeting in June. In the past the
board has unanimously opposed removing the books, with board
chairman Sharon Brooks saying the decision was "based
on the principle of freedom of information rather than
that book," according to the AP.
"We want to be a neutral provider for both a
social and political role, to meet the needs of a
diverse group of in our community," Brooks told a
local paper, reports the AP. "We are open to working
with the public, with the council." (The
