Iowa senate Republicans introduced a resolution Thursday for a constitutional amendment that would define marriage as union between a man and woman, but the proposal appears unlikely to gain traction this session.

According to the Associated Press, some 18 senate Republicans introduced the amendment in order to overturn the state supreme court decision that legalized same-sex marriage in April. Sen. Merlin Bartz, a sponsor, said the amendment would present the issue to voters for consideration.

"But Bartz conceded senate joint resolution 2001 faces nearly insurmountable odds in being debated during the 2010 session given the steadfast opposition from senate majority leader Mike Gronstal, a Council Bluffs Democrat," reported the AP.
