Craig Lowe, the gay man elected mayor of Gainesville, Fla., was sworn in Thursday at a ceremony where he poked fun at his sexual orientation and shrugged off comments made about it.
"I am the first in a category to be elected mayor," Lowe said. "That's not something that I actually hid during the campaign. In fact, it was something that was published on my campaign literature, perhaps contrary to the advice of some of my campaign staff, and that is I am the first University of Georgia alumnus."
Lowe said he wanted to be mayor of all Gainesville and not be portrayed as the mayor "who is that or the mayor who is this," The Gainesville Sun reported.
"Some people grow up, and some people don't," Lowe said in regard to a local church that posted signs during his campaign declaring "No Homo Mayor."
Lowe won the April runoff election by 42 votes.
