The South Asian Lesbian and Gay Association marched in the India Day Parade in New York City for the first time in about a decade Sunday.
According to NY1, the Federation of Indian Associations decided to include the group last week in the parade, which celebrated the 63rd anniversary of independence from British colonial rule. Last year, SALGA was not allowed to march and protested at the parade.
On Friday, parade organizers decided to allow SALGA to march at the urging of New York City council speaker Christine Quinn, council member Daniel Dromm and council member Jimmy Van Bramer, who are gay. Quinn and Dromm marched with SALGA in the parade, which drew at least 50,000 spectators.
