While the Alabama house of representatives debated a bill to limit the amount of gifts legislators and their spouses can receive, the lone openly gay member of the house raised the question as to whether the rule would apply to her spouse.
Patricia Todd, a Democrat, asked the question Wednesday on the house floor, because the state has constitutionally banned marriage equality and does not recognize same-sex marriages from other states. Todd and her partner were married in another state, according to the Associated Press.
Republican representative Jim McClendon, who sponsored the bill, did not have an answer but said Todd's question posed an "interesting dilemma."
